Chapter 20

Emma arrived home to find Travis sitting at the end of the dock, feeding a couple of swans who called the pond home. He looked content and relaxed, leaning back against the bench, which had been placed there for moments just like this. The afternoon breeze played with his hair, and the polarized sunglasses reflected the sun’s rays.

Letting Dixie out of the car, Emma followed the puppy as she raced down the pier to greet Travis. Hearing her excited barks, Travis looked in their direction, pushing the sunglasses to the top of his head, and gave a wave. He got to his feet as Emma got close and pulled her in for a hug and a light kiss.

“How was opening day?”

“I think it went pretty well. Everyone seemed happy and there were no dog fights to report.” Emma laughed as she answered, taking a seat next to Travis. Dixie spotted the swans and made her way to the edge of the pier to watch their progress as they glided across the water. “Kim was there taking pictures for the paper.”

“So, she said. I talked to her a few minutes ago. She called to tell me she wasn’t going to make it here for your meeting. And Jake is deep in research and said he’d catch up later.” Travis paused and grinned at Emma, “Looks like it’s just you and me.”

“I don’t mind that at all,” she grinned back and settled against the back of the bench. They sat content in each other’s company until Dixie grew bored watching the swans and made her way back to the bench. Emma reached down to help the puppy up since she was too small to make the jump without help.

“Why don’t we head over to my studio? I’ve got a couple of things I’d like to show you. I’ve got about an hour and a half before I need to be at Mom's for a meeting with her and our lawyer.”

“Sure. Charlotte told my mom about your family project. We’d like to be involved in any way we can, including financial sponsorship.”

Emma grinned back at Travis, glad his family approved of the proposed preserve. “Thanks, Travis. I have a feeling that I’m going to be more involved than Mom and Aiden, just by living and working here on site. She didn’t say it out loud, but I think they are getting ready to leave on another one of Aiden’s consulting trips. And when they go, there’s no telling how long they’ll be.”

“That’s a lot to put on your shoulders. Especially since you’re trying to get your business established. I’m here for whatever you need.”

Emma reached over and squeezed his hand in thanks as they walked to her office. “It may not be that bad. We are hiring someone with experience in setting up and running nature preserves, so I’m hoping he’ll handle most of the work. I will be meeting him later at Mom’s.” Walking over to her desk, she pulled open the top drawer and held up the thumb drive.
